One of the most common reasons for the AC to stop working is a loss of pressure that can be the result of a leak somewhere in the system. Many times, a fitting on a pressure line can start to leak after years of use, and the refrigerant in the system will slowly leak until the amount of refrigerant falls below the minimum amount needed. 

Once the system's pressure falls far enough, the AC system will no longer cool the air passing through the condenser or heat exchanger. Mechanical Issues

Sometimes that information can make dealing with broken AC repair easier and make it a little easier for the tech to determine where the problem is.
