Why It’s Time To Swap Out Your Winter Tires For The Summer

Did you have winter tires put on your vehicle at the start of the season? You may think that they still perform well and that everything will work fine for the warmer seasons that are coming up. However, it is a good idea to swap out those winter tires for a different type. Here are some reasons why it's bad to keep those winter tires on your vehicle.

Unnecessary Wear

You may not realize it, but keeping winter tires on your vehicle throughout the year is going to damage your winter tires by the time you need them next winter. This is due to the different type of tread that is used for winter tires. They are typically spaced apart with deep grooves so that the snow will fit between them and give you improved traction. Unfortunately, this is not good for driving on all year round.

With less of the tread touching the ground, you will quickly wear down the tread on those winter tires. When the snow comes back in a year, your treads will be diminished and you will lose the effectiveness of having winter tires. This defeats the whole point of getting winter tires in the first place, and you will be wasting money as a result.

Harder Rubber

Winter tires are designed to have a softer rubber so that the tires do not become hard under the cold weather conditions. This means that the rubber becomes softer in the hot temperatures of summer. Having performance or all-season tires on your vehicle in the warmer months is going to give you that harder rubber that helps your vehicle perform better by improving traction.

Smaller Treads

Warmer weather means that you are only going to be dealing with water on the road from when it rains. Since you want as much of your tire touching the ground as possible for improved traction, those performance or all-season tires are going to have smaller treads that allow water to flow through them. This improves your traction on the road during wet conditions that you will frequently see.

Don't try to save money by keeping your winter tires installed on your vehicle. Your safety should be at the top of your mind, since you want tires that are going to make your car function as safely as possible. Visit your local tire shop so that they can put on new tires that are more suitable for the warmer weather.
